Contender is a five minute experimental film about the bipolarities of boxing. The film illustrates the dichotomy of this raw and bloody sport and the graceful, dance-like movements and timing the boxer must perfect; the monotony of constant repetitive training versus the overbearing anticipation before a match; the showman’s bravado beside the naked truth of one-on-one confrontation, and the aggressive cheering/jeering of the crowd against the sweet ringing of the bell.

The music and visuals equalise to illustrate the persistence of training. The images are heavily treated to remove the audience from their preconceived ideas about the sport, and Terry Pelarec’s score with its suspenseful tempo is a thrilling complement to the dangerous dance of the boxer.
